California window tint laws

Everything CA Vehicle Code ยง26708 says about window tint, in plain English โ€” written by people who install it for a living.

California has some of the strictest tint laws in the country. The good news: enforcement is mostly visual, the rules are clear, and we know exactly how to keep you legal โ€” or how to balance darkness with risk if you want to push it.

The legal limits, by window

Windshield

Tint is allowed only above the AS-1 line โ€” typically the top 4โ€“5 inches. This is the "windshield strip" or "eyebrow" tint. Below the line, only clear films are legal (like clear ceramic for heat rejection without darkness).

Front side windows (driver and passenger)

Must allow more than 70% VLT. In practice this means clear film or very light ceramic โ€” anything 20%, 35%, or 50% on the front sides is illegal under CA Vehicle Code ยง26708.

Rear side windows

Any darkness is legal. 5% limo, 20% standard, 35% medium โ€” your choice.

Rear windshield

Any darkness is legal, as long as the vehicle has both functioning side mirrors.

The most common LA setup: 5โ€“6 inch windshield strip, 70% VLT clear ceramic on front sides, 20% or 35% ceramic on rear sides + rear windshield. Looks aggressive from outside, fully legal, blocks heat everywhere.

Penalties

The fine for illegal tint in California is typically $25 first offense, escalating to $197 for repeat offenses. The bigger pain is the "Fix-It Ticket" โ€” you must remove the tint, get the vehicle re-inspected, and pay the court fee to dismiss.

Insurance impact: typically none directly, but illegal tint can be cited as contributing factor in accident claims (e.g., obstructed view). Some insurers won't pay for tint damage if the install is illegal.

Medical exemptions

California allows medical exemptions under Vehicle Code ยง26708.5 for conditions like lupus, photosensitivity, melanoma history, and certain skin disorders. You must carry a signed letter from a licensed physician. We've installed under medical exemption โ€” process below.

  1. Get a signed exemption letter from your doctor (must specify medical necessity)
  2. Bring it with you on install day
  3. Keep a copy in your glove box at all times
  4. Tint installer (us) keeps a copy on file

How we keep you legal

Before any install, we walk through your daily driving routes, the level of risk you're comfortable with, and your medical situation. Our standard quote includes:

  • Clear ceramic on front sides (70%+ VLT) โ€” full heat rejection, fully legal
  • Whatever you want on rear / rear-windshield โ€” your call
  • Clear flag on anything that's questionable so you can decide knowing the risk

Bottom line

The smart play in California: clear ceramic on the windshield + front sides, dark ceramic on rear. You get the heat rejection of full dark tint, the privacy benefit on the rear, and zero ticket risk.
